Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music

The Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music has been in existence at Biola since the early 1950's, beginning with emphases in Church Music and in Applied Music. Eventually the other currently offered emphases were added and expanded through the addition of the Bachelor of Music degree around 1954.
The BA in Music is intended for the student who wishes to study music and receive classical training within the liberal arts degree framework. Students can choose to take private lessons in an instrument and can have emphases in any instrument or in voice if they choose. This track is appropriate for those who do not have specific professional career goals in the performance, composition, or teaching of music, but who wish to use a degree in music as a foundation for a wide range of career options and/or graduate study in areas such as musicology, law, theology, church music, etc. The emphasis in this degree is on a broad coverage of music rather than on specialization. However, the nature of music as a performing art necessitates at least a moderate level of performance proficiency in a principal instrument or voice.
