Torrey Honors Institute

Academic History
The Torrey Honors Institute is a program in the liberal arts general education for undergraduates at Biola University. Modeled on the Oxbridge tutorial system, Torrey is designed to hone students' critical thinking skills by exposing them to classical texts and using discussion as the primary mode of instruction. Torrey offers individual mentoring and a tight-knit Christian community. Students in the program may study any major offered by Biola University. Torrey stresses academic excellence, but also values students who demonstrate abilities in diverse fields.

Organization

The Institute's students are arranged into two houses, Morgan House and Johnson House. The two houses have different unit loads and curricula lists.

Within the two houses, students are assigned to groups of about 15-18 students. Generally speaking, these students remain together as a class across semesters, though students might change groups or enroll in meta-Torreys. The group of students will assemble at their class time and meet their tutor for that class. The tutor is a THI faculty professor, who rotate between the groups teaching different books every semester.

Each individual student is given a THI professor as a mentor. The mentor and student meet over the course of the term, and the mentor decides the individual requirements for that student as well as that student's final grade.

Students who most live up to the ideals of the institute can be selected for the St. Anne's on the Hill Award.
