Moody Bible Institute was founded by Dwight Lyman Moody in 1886 in Chicago, Illinois. Moody said of his training school as it began, “I tell you what I want, and what I have on my heart. I believe we have got to have gap-men to stand between the laity and the ministers; men who are trained to do city mission work. Take men that have the gifts and train them for the work of reaching the people.” http://www.moody.edu/edu cited Thus the Chicago Evangelization Society, later renamed the Moody Bible Institute (MBI), was born.
Moody was MBI's first president, with R.A. Torrey following from 1899-1904 after Moody's death. Dr. Torrey made many contributions to MBI, including new curriculum, evening school programs, and what would eventually become MOODY magazine, which was published for 103 years. MBI also owes the name of its mascot to Dr Torrey as the "Archers" (his middle name) and the part of the name of its auditorium, the Torrey-Gray Auditorium.
