How to Import Google Contacts into Microsoft Outlook


Introduction

This page explains the steps for importing (or "migrating") your Google contacts list into Outlook. This applies to Windows PC users.

This procedure is useful for those who use Outlook to access their Google email (Gmail).

 


How to Export a Contacts Group from Gmail

1Go in to your Biola Gmail (via web browser).

Click on the Mail menu, and select Contacts.

This opens your Google Contacts.

3Click on the More button and select Export.... 
4Select the radio button for The group.
5Click on the drop-down menu to select the group you want to migrate.
6Select the Outlook CSV radio button.
7Click Export.
8Select a location to save the exported .csv file (Example: Desktop).
9Name the .csv file appropriately (Example: "Starts with A.csv")
10Click Save.

 


How to Import the CSV file into Outlook

StepWhat to DoHow It Looks
1In Outlook, open the People section (Ctrl+3). 
2Right-click on Contacts and select New Folder Group.
3Name the folder appropriately.
4Select Contacts from the folder tree.
5Click OK.
6Open the File menu, and select Open & Export.
7Select Import/Export.
8Select Import from another program or file from the list.
9Click Next.
10Select Comma Separated Values from the list.
11Click Next.
12In the Browse window, go to the location of the .csv file that you exported from Google Contacts.
13Select the .csv file, and click OK.
14Select Replace duplicates with items imported.
15Click Next.
16Select the folder you created as the destination folder.

Click Finish to complete the import.

NOTEYou should now have a folder under My Contacts that contains the list of contacts that you exported from Gmail.

 


How to Create a Contact Group in Outlook

1In Outlook, open the People section (Ctrl+3). 
2Click on the New Contact Group button under the Home tab.

Double-click in the empty list of contacts.

This will open the Select Members window.

From the Address Book menu, select the folder that you created earlier.

The contacts in that folder should show in the pane below.

5Press Ctrl+A to select all contacts in the folder.
6Click the Members button to add all selected contacts to the members field.

Click OK.

The Contact Group should now be populated.

8Name the contact group appropriately.

Click Save & Close to save the contact group.

NOTEYour contact group should now appear in your Contacts list.

 


How to Email a Contact Group in Outlook

StepWhat to DoHow It Looks
1Open the Mail section of Outlook (Ctrl+1). 
2Click the New Email button to compose a new message.
3In the To field, you can start typing the name of a contact group, and it should pop up in the suggestion window.
4Click the suggestion or finish typing the name of the contact group, and hit Enter.
