How to Update the Operating System on a PC

Introduction

This page lists the steps to update your computer's Windows operating system. It will take 30-45 minutes to complete, most of which you will be able to use your computer.

Note: Do not install any applications on your computer while you are upgrading your computer's OS as it may interfere with its ability to install.

Click the Start menu.

Click Settings.

Note: If you don't see Settings, you can search for it in the search text box.

Windows 10: Click the Update & Security button.

Windows 11: Click Windows Update.

Click Check for updates.

Note: Click Check for updates even if Windows initially says You're up to date.

Follow all on-screen prompts on the Windows Update window.

Note: You may be asked to click Install or Restart.


6After your computer's operating system has updated, repeat steps 1-5 until the Windows Update page says You're up to date even after clicking the Check for updates button.
