Canvas (LMS)

Canvas is a web and mobile-based learning management system made by Instructure and used at Biola University to conduct teaching and learning. It allows professors to post course syllabi, assignments, initiate discussion, or direct communication as well as students to submit course assignments and interact with fellow students and their professors.

For more information on the available features and functions of Canvas, please see Instructure's Canvas feature page.

How to Get the Service

An automatic process enrolls Teachers and students into their courses four times a day (midnight, 6:00 a.m., noon, and 6:00 p.m.) based on current enrollment statuses in Registrar's database ("Banner").

Faculty: The list of classes at Cognos Course Pallet shows who is listed as the "teacher of record" for a class. If something is incorrect on that list, your department will need to contact the Course Scheduler in the Registrar's Office to fix it. If you are an an adjunct or do not have access to Course Pallet, please talk with your chair or department's administrative assistant to find out if you are the teacher of record.

Students: Check your schedule at myaccount.biola.edu to see for which classes you are registered. If you see your class on Canvas, but you cannot access it, it is likely that the teacher has not yet "Published" it. Contact your teacher.

TA: There is no automated process. Email Matthew Weathers to have a TA added to a class. (This request can come from the teacher or the department.)

Requirements for the Service
  • Student: Must be enrolled for the desired course in Registrar's database.
  • Faculty: Must be listed as the faculty for the course in Registrar's database.
  • TA: The course's Faculty or Department approving the individual to be a TA for the course.
